Lexington – Aaron McGlone belted his ninth home run of the season and Robert Newton extended his hitting streak to nine games, but the Kentucky Wildcats (12-21) could not maintain a four-run lead and lost to the Louisville Cardinals (23-11), 10-8 in 11 innings.
Louisville scored two runs to open the game, but Kentucky responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. McGlone was hit by a Todd Raithel pitch, and John Wilson singled to advance McGlone to second. Newton, Vince Harrison, and Will Crumbaugh had RBI singles to give UK the early lead.
The Wildcats added one run in the third through sixth innings, but allowed three Cardinal runs in the top of the fifth to bring Louisville to within one run. Cardinal coaches Lelo Prado and Brian Mundorf were ejected in the inning for arguing a play at the plate, and the momentum appeared to be in UKs favor.
Louisville squelched the momentum and answered with one run in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to tie the score at eight-all and send the game into extra innings. Catcher Tony Taylor and first baseman Doug Lorenz hit singles in the 11th inning and both runners scored on errors by Wilson and center fielder Beau Moore to give the Cardinals the lead, 10-8.
The Wildcats could not score in the bottom of the 11th inning and lost their fourth consecutive game, 10-8.
Kentucky returns to action on Wednesday, April 14, playing host to Belmont University of Nashville, Tenn., before resuming conference action against Florida in Gainesville this weekend.
