LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky baseball team (16-23, 6-12 SEC) returns to conference action on Friday, April 23, playing host to the Tennessee Volunteers (21-22, 4-14 SEC) in the first of a three-game series at Cliff Hagan Stadium at 7 p.m.
Friday’s game will be the 255th meeting between the two schools with UT leading the series 132-122. Coach Keith Madison holds a 35-45 lifetime record against the Vols. Tennessee beat Kentucky in two out of three games last season in Knoxville.
The Wildcats split their midweek games, losing to Cincinnati, 7-5, on Tuesday and defeating Morehead, 10-3, on Wednesday. UK won its second SEC series of the season last weekend against Florida, beating the Gators on Friday and Saturday in Gainesville.
Nathan Kent was named SEC Pitcher of the Week after pitching a six-hit shutout against Florida. The Frankfort, Ky., native struck out nine batters and held the Gators scoreless at home for the first time in 160 games. The shutout was the first of Kent’s career. He also picked up his third victory of the season on Wednesday, pitching seven innings and striking out six Morehead State Eagles. Kent will pitch on Sunday to close the series.
Ben Shaffar will take the mound for UK on Friday. The junior from Leitchfield, Ky., is leading the team in strikeouts, amassing 77 Ks in 60.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Brandon Webb will pitch on Saturday. Webb pitched the final game of the Florida series on Sunday in Gainesville.
John Wilson hit his 17th home run of the season against Morehead on Wednesday and is now in sole possession of the SEC lead. Junior Aaron McGlone has hit two home runs in as many games and has raised his batting average 20 points in the last four games to .312.
Friday night’s game has been added to the Fox Sports South SEC baseball television schedule. UK alumnus Larry Conley and Dave Neal will be broadcasting the game, the second UK game to be televised this season.
