LEXINGTON, Kty. – Designated hitter Brad Cresse had two home runs and three RBIs to lead LSU to a 7-3 victory over Kentucky Friday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium on the UK campus. It was the first win for LSU in its last seven trips to Lexington. LSU (23-7, 8-2) snapped the Wildcats’ three-game winning streak.
LSU’s Doug Thompson (7-0) tossed a complete game eight-hitter, allowing three runs and striking out eight UK batters. UK’s Jason Chaney (0-4) picked up the loss after allowing seven hits and five runs in 5.1 innings. Ben Shaffar relieved Chaney in the sixth and scattered only one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
UK (11-14, 3-7) got off to a quick start thanks to an RBI double by Jason Colemire in the first inning, giving the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. Colemire leads the Wildcats with 14 doubles, including nine in conference play. LSU battled back for two runs in the second inning on Cresseis two-run homer, his first of the game. The Tigers added another run in the third on an RBI single by Eddie Furniss.
UK put together a rally in fifth, tying the game at 3-3. Justin Bunch began things with a leadoff single and advanced to second on a Andy Green groundout. Bunch moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Aaron McGlone sacrifice fly.
Cresse nailed his second home run of the game in the sixth, which proved to be the game-winner. Wes Davis added an RBI double in the inning. The Tigers added two insurance runs in the ninth inning with a two-run homer by Trey McClure.
Josh Loggins and Jason Colemire had two hits apiece for the Wildcats. Furniss went 2-for-4 with an RBI. McClure also had two hits. The series continues on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled at 2 p.m. UK’s Brandon Webb (2-1, 6.32) will face LSU’s Chris Demouy (1-1, 3.14).
