The No. 1 singles player for the University of Kentucky men’s tennis team, Cedric Kauffmann, was selected to compete in the 1998 NCAA Championship singles competition May 27-31 in Athens, Ga. Fifth-ranked Kauffmann has been ranked in the nation’s top-10 the entire season and has an overall record of 32-14. Kauffmann is a three-time first-team All-SEC selection and a two-time Academic SEC Honor Roll member.
The ITA announced Tuesday that Kauffmann was selected as the Region III nominee for the National ITA John Van Nostrand Memorial Award. The senior is included in a select group of seven other regional nominees to be considered for the national award, which will be announced at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga.
The selection of the individuals for the Division I Men’s Tennis Championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes. The seeding for the singles’ competition will take place on Monday, May 19. The University of Kentucky will serve as host to the NCAA Championship team regional competition this weekend, May 15-17, at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. This is the first time that the Wildcats, the fourth seeded team in the tournament, will serve as host to this event. UK will face Alabama in the first round of competition on Friday, May 15, at 4 p.m.
