FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Coach Keith Madison and pitcher Ben Shaffar wereejected in the second inning as the Kentucky Wildcats (12-19, 4-10 SEC)lost their second straight game to Arkansas (25-12, 11-3 SEC) Saturday, 10-1.
The Razorbacks scored five earned runs to open the game, including threeback-to-back-to-back home runs by center fielder Jack Welsh, third basemanRodney Nye, and left fielder Ryan Lundquist. Shaffar had two wild pitchesin the inning as five runs crossed the plate.
The second inning provided excitement for the Arkansas fans as Shaffarthrew a pitch behind designated hitter Scott Crossett’s back. Crossett laiddown a questionable bunt in Friday’s game with Arkansas leading 12-1 andwas hit by a pitch in his first at-bat. Home plate umpire Mark McGillejected Shaffar and Madison for intentionally throwing at a batter and aten minute argument ensued. Josh Paxton relieved Shaffar and with one pitchhad Crossett line out to second baseman Andy Green.
The Wildcats did not score until the top of the ninth inning when JohnWilson belted his tenth home run in 12 games to prevent Arkansas’ firstshut-out of the season. Despite a late rally, the Wildcats could not catchthe Razorbacks and lost their second consecutive SEC game, 10-1.
According to NCAA rules, Shaffar will have to serve a four-gamesuspension, beginning Sunday in the series finale against Arkansas. Shaffarwill be eligible to pitch on Saturday, April 17, against Florida inGainesville.
