ATHENS, Ga. – The men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in the 56th AnnualFlorida Relays on March 27. This is the second meet of the outdoor season.The team started the season at the SEC Four-Way Meet in Athens, Ga., onMarch 20. At the meet, Kentucky had nine athletes finish either first orsecond in their event.
In the women’s 100-meter low hurdles, Lutisha Shittu took home first placewith a time of 14.20, and teammate Michelle Williams placed second with atime of 14.43.
Three Kentucky athletes occupied the top three spots in the women’s triplejump competition. Valerie Williams, Shevan Threats and Falana Greenwellfinished first, second and third in the event with leaps of 42-00, 39-7.25and 39-3.75, respectively.
In the women’s shot put, Heidi Quast earned second place and Suzie vonBernuth earned third with their tosses of 44-6.25 and 43-8.00,respectively. von Bernuth also earned fourth place in the discus throw andseventh in the hammer throw while Quast took home eighth place in thehammer throw. Beth Burkett finished second in the javelin with her throwof 134-8.00.
In the men’s competition, Jude Hammond took home two top finishes, one inthe 100-meter dash with a time of 11.12 and the other in the 200-meter dashwith a time of 22.21. Mark Miller finished in second place in the400-meter dash with his time of 47.64. Jeff Ellis finished in second placein the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 51.19.
Matt Kavanagh began his journey to compete in another NCAA OutdoorChampionship with his first-place finish in the hammer throw. His toss of211-9.00 was over 15 feet more than the second-place finisher, Jay Harvardof Georgia.
