Carter Named “Peach of an Athlete”: University of Kentucky punter Jimmy Carter will receive the “Peach of an Athlete” award Monday night in Atlanta at the “Peach of an Athlete” banquet sponsored by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Carter is one of 24 college athletes who will receive the award. The honorees are chosen because they represent the principles of Scouting through their character, service to the community, and commitment to athletics and academics. All 24 honorees either attend school in Georgia or call Georgia home.

Carter, a native of Dunwoody, Ga., has been a three-year starter at punter for the Wildcats. He averaged a career-best 40.2 yards per punt last season, including a single-game high average of 55 yards in the Tennessee game. He holds four school records for punting. He is expected to be UK’s starting punter during his senior season in 1998.

Off the field, Carter has been exemplary in the classroom and in community service. He is a two-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll with a major in biology. Jimmy was chosen to the 1997 Advance Auto Parts/SEC “Good Works Team” in recognition of his community service. He has been very active in “The Cats’ Cause” service program. In addition, he is the president of UK’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has made numerous speaking appearances on behalf of the FCA.

In addition to Carter, UK men’s basketball player Jeff Sheppard will be honored with the “Peach of an Athlete” Role Model Award. According to the Atlanta Area Council, Sheppard was chosen because he “exemplifies the theme of the Boy Scouts by showing that character counts.”

Carter will be attending the banquet on Monday but Sheppard will not be able to attend because of a prior commitment to a FCA banquet in Louisville.
