Couch top pick in draft.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Cleveland Browns began the Draft of the Quarterbackstoday by selecting Kentucky’s Tim Couch.
Couch, who left school after his junior season, reached a contract agreementwith the expansion team hours before the draft.
In selecting Couch, the Browns – awarded a franchise by the NFL after theoriginal Browns moved to Baltimore – opened what was expected to be afirst-round run on quarterbacks.
Couch posed for photographs with Browns owner Al Lerner while, in amakeshift Dawg Pound in the balcony, fans dressed in Browns jerseys chanted”Here we go, Brownies.”
“He displayed so much character and poise,” Browns president Carmen Policysaid. “He’s such a solid human being.”
Browns and Couch reach agreement.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Kentucky quarterback Tim Couch reached agreement with theCleveland Browns hours before the draft was to begin, assuring he would be theNo. 1 pick.
The Browns and Couch’s agent, Tom Condon of IMG, finalized the deal at about9 a.m., NFL sources told The Associated Press, speaking on the condition ofanonymity.
Broadcast reports said the deal was for seven years and worth $48 millionwith a $12.25 million signing bonus. That was a slight increase on the dealCondon got for Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning, the No. 1 pick in lastyear’s draft.
The Browns are returning to the league as an expansion team after athree-year hiatus, and will usher in a new era with the 21-year-old Couch astheir quarterback of the future.
Condon began face-to-face contract negotiations with Lal Heneghan,Cleveland’s contract expert, in New York on Friday night. The two met for threehours before breaking for dinner and said they were willing to talk all nightif necessary.
Another report said the Browns had also reached agreement in principle withOregon quarterback Akili Smith, and would have chosen him if they had beenunable to close a deal with Condon.
The 6-foot-4, 227-pound Couch decided to skip his senior season at Kentuckywhen he knew he would have a chance to be the No. 1 pick in the draft. Heopenly courted the Browns and appeared to be the frontrunner before Smith blewaway Browns coach Chris Palmer with a private workout.
However, Couch answered whatever questions the Browns still had about himduring a 90-minute workout last weekend that was attended by Browns presidentCarmen Policy and owner Al Lerner.
Couch was a first-team All-American at Kentucky last season after passingfor 4,275 yards and 36 touchdowns. He passed for at least 300 yards and one TDin each game, and finished his career by throwing for 336 yards and two TDs inthe Outback Bowl against Penn State.
