HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team is currently in 14th place at 596 after day one of competition at the Marshall Invitational Golf Tournament Friday.

Leading the way for the Wildcats is senior Mike Cassity who is tied for 41st place with a 148 and a low round of 72. UK’s Wes Furnish, who has competed in seven tournaments this season, and Chris Mueller, the overall season leader with a stroke average of 74.56, are tied for 54th with a 150. Marshall’s golf team stands in first place, with a score of 567, after two rounds of play. Miami and Illinois are tied for second place at 576. The final day of competition will be Saturday when 18 holes will be played on the Guyan Golf & Country Club beginning at 7:30 a.m. The course measures 6,456 yards from the championship tees. The 20 participating teams in the Marshall Invitational are as follows: Akron, Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Murray State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ohio University, Toledo and Wisconsin.

Kentucky competed in last year’s Marshall Invitational and placed ninth out of 18 teams with a team score of 903. Senior Ryan Loghry was the top UK finisher, tying for 22nd place, with an individual score of 223. Kentucky won the tournament in 1978. Steve Flesch was Kentucky’s only individual champion, in 1988, with a score of 213. UK finished in second place that year.
