Vince Harrison hit his second home run in as many games and Robert Newtonhit his first home run of the season as the Kentucky Wildcats (9-16, 3-7SEC) defeated the Georgia Bulldogs (14-14, 2-7 SEC) in the opening game ofthe series, 3-1.

Kentucky pitcher Ben Shaffar and Georgia starter Cliff Brand dueled untilthe sixth inning when Chris Crawford hit a solo home run to give theBulldogs the early lead, 1-0.

The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the inning with two back-to-backhome runs. Aaron McGlone led off the inning with a walk and Harrison hithis second collegiate home run to give the Cats the lead, 2-1. Newtonfollowed Harrison with a solo shot over the center field wall to giveKentucky the game, 3-1.

Ben Shaffar pitched his first complete game of the year, throwing eightinnings with seven strikeouts to add to his team-leading 66 on the season.John Wilson extended his hitting streak to 13 games with his single in theeighth inning.

Kentucky returns to action Saturday, April 3, in the second game of theseries against Georgia. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m. andwill be telecast on Fox Sports South.
