Mumme Co-Hosting “Celebrity Celebration”: Coach Hal Mumme and countrymusic star John Michael Montgomery are playing host to “The CelebrityCelebration” on Monday and Tuesday, May 24-25, at the Kearney Hills GolfLinks in Lexington. There is a practice round on Monday and thecompetition is on Tuesday.
“The Celebrity Celebration” is a fundraising event for the McDowell CancerFoundation at the University of Kentucky.
Four-week Summer Session in Progress: The four-week summer school sessionbegan May 11 and goes through June 8. Approximately 25 players are inLexington in order to work out in the weight room, begin summer jobs,and/or begin taking summer school classes. The eight-week summer schoolsession begins in mid-June. Most of the players will be in Lexingtonduring the eight-week period.
May Recruiting Period Wrapping Up: The May recruiting period, a time ofacademic and athletic evaluation of high school prospects, continuesthrough May 26. The UK coaches may visit high schools, meet withprincipals, teachers, coaches, and counselors, gather transcripts, visitathletic combines, and evaluate athletic competition, such as springfootball practice, baseball games, track meets, etc.
Commonwealth Stadium Construction Update: Construction crews havecompleted the installation of structural steel and most of the concretework on the upper concourses is complete. The aluminum seating isapproximately 75 percent complete. Wall framing continues on both ends anddrywall work has begun on the east end. Precast concrete panels have beeninstalled on the east end and are in progress on the west end.
Both ends of Commonwealth Stadium are being enclosed. The project willadd about 10,000 seats, bringing capacity to approximately 68,000. Up to$27.6 million may be spent on the stadium expansion, which is expected tobe ready for the opening of the 1999 season.
