LEXINGTON, Ky. – Three University of Kentucky football players,offensive guard John Schlarman, strong safety Tremayne Martin, and widereceiver Craig Yeast, were named to the Coaches’ All-SoutheasternConference second team released Wednesday.
Having three players selected to the Coaches’ All-SEC team is a schoolrecord for Kentucky. The coaches selected only a first team from 1984-91and have selected a first and second team from 1992 to the present.

Schlarman, a senior from Ft. Thomas, Ky., was the leader of the linethat helped Kentucky rank sixth in the nation in total offense with 474yards per game. The Wildcats led the SEC and placed second nationally inpassing offense, and Schlarman’s blocking helped successfully protect thepasser on 95 percent of all pass plays this season. The UK offense broke51 school records and 15 SEC marks during the 1997 campaign.
Yeast, a junior from Harrodsburg, Ky., caught 73 passes for 873 yardsand 10 touchdowns during the 1997 season. He led the SEC in receptions pergame (6.6) and was second in the league in TD catches. Yeast broke or tied11 school records, including the single-season and career records forreceptions and receiving yardage. Yeast will be remembered in Wildcatshistory for catching the game-winning TD pass in the overtime win againstAlabama.

In addition to his pass catching exploits, Yeast also proved to be adangerous player on kick returns. He returned a punt and a kickoff fortouchdowns this season, the first Wildcats player to accomplish that featin 30 years.
Martin, a senior from Apopka, Fla., led all SEC defensive backs intackles with 96. He had five interceptions and six pass breakups in 1997,pacing the Wildcats in both categories. His jolting hits caused threefumbles this year, including the Alabama fumble in overtime that set upYeast’s game-winning TD catch.
The Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference teams were releasedTuesday. Schlarman was a first-team choice by the AP and Martin, Yeast,and quarterback Tim Couch were second-team picks.
