University of Kentucky punter Jimmy Carter has been named to the Advance Auto Parts/Southeastern Conference “Good Works Team” and will be honored during Saturday’s Jefferson-Pilot Sports telecast of the Kentucky-South Carolina football game.

Carter, a junior from Dunwoody, Ga., has been very active in community service during his years as a Wildcat. Carter has:

  • participated four years in UK’s mentor program for local elementary school students, promoting individual responsibility and academic success;
  • done numerous speaking engagements at area schools;
  • worked at the UK Children’s Hospital “Breakfast With Santa” (1996);
  • helped organize UK’s “Schoolhouse Rock” academic pep rally for 2,000 fourth- and fifth-grade students (spring 1997);
  • worked at the Doug Pelfrey “Kicks for Kids” charity golf tournament (1997);
  • been a celebrity reader at the Lexington Herald-Leader Read-a-thon to promote literacy (1997).

In addition, Carter has been active in his school’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is president of the organization during the 1997-98 school year. In that role, Carter has:

  • done numerous speaking engagements at churches and youth groups, expressing the role of faith in his life;
  • been a guest speaker at the tri-state “True Love Waits” youth rally, promoting the value of sexual abstinence;
  • also done speaking engagements and activities on behalf of the Athletes in Action ministry.

On the field, Carter is in his third season as the starting punter for the Wildcats. He is averaging 39.3 yards per punt, and has placed five punts inside the 20-yard line. Carter averaged 35.6 yards as a freshman and improved his mark to 39.5 yards per punt last season. In the classroom, Carter’s major is biology and he earned a place on the 1996 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Each week during the season, one league player is named to the SEC “Good Works Team,” which is sponsored by Advance Auto Parts and Jefferson-Pilot Sports.
