LEXINGTON, Ky. – Doug Johnson threw five touchdown passes, including three toJacquez Green in a 28-point first quarter, as top-ranked Floridaprovided Tim Couch a learning experience in a 55-28 rout ofSoutheastern Conference East foe Kentucky.
Florida (4-0, 2-0 SEC) scored early and often, never allowingthe dangerous Couch a chance to get Kentucky’s offense going.Johnson was 22-of-34 for 286 yards and no interceptions andGreen caught 10 passes for 139 yards. Johnson and Couch nowhave 17 touchdown passes this season.
Kentucky (2-2, 0-2) had its four-game home winning streakstopped and lost to Florida for the 11th straight time, fallingto 17-31 in the all-time series. The Wildcats are 5-27 againstFlorida since 1957, including a current 1-17 slide.
Florida scored 22 seconds into the game on its first offensiveplay when Fred Taylor ran 16 yards for a score, paving the wayfor the Johnson-Green show. Defensive end Willie Rodgersintercepted Couch on the first offensive play of the game,though the ball appeared to hit the ground on televisionreplays.
Johnson threw a four-yard scoring pass to Green to make it 14-0just 4:16 into the game and the pair hooked up on a 10-yarder4:28 later. Fred Weary made the first of his two interceptionslate in the quarter and, on the next play, Johnson and Greenclosed the 28-point quarter by connecting on a 25-yard scoringplay with 12 seconds left.
Couch finished 33-of-59 for 348 yards and two touchdowns againstthree interceptions, finishing with five less yards than HeismanTrophy frontrunner Peyton Manning had last week for Tennessee.Craig Yeast had a career day with 10 catches and 125 yards,while Kevin Coleman added five catches for 62 yards and a pairof scores.
