Track and Field Set to Begin NCAA Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The Kentucky track and field Wildcats will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships at one of the sport’s most storied venues, Hayward Field, beginning on Wednesday.
The meet will take place from June 5-8, and it will consist of only semifinals and finals with the best 24 athletes in each event.
ESPN3/ESPNU will broadcast the majority of the meet, with supplementary webcasting on a Pac-12.com.
Kentucky enters the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 10 Wildcats set to compete in 11 events.
Four Wildcats will begin their NCAA Championship campaign on Wednesday.
Two finals will be contested on the first day of the meet with Bradley Szypka in the shot put preliminary round and final, and Chelsea Oswald racing in the 10,000 meters final.
Keilah Tyson and Luis Orta will race in the 100m dash and 3,000m steeplechase prelims as well.
The men’s shot put and women’s 100m will begin at 8:30 p.m. ET, the steeplechase will start at 9:45 p.m. and the women’s 10K is set to go off at 10:10 p.m.
Six Wildcat men qualified for NCAAs, while four women will compete in five events. Last season three men and no women qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships,
Kentucky sends two Outdoor All-Americans, Andrew Evans (discus) and Raymond Dykstra (javelin) from last season to this year’s National Championship. The 10 Wildcats in Eugene have earned eight All-America honors, including in cross country and indoors, throughout each of their careers.
Six of the ten Wildcats that clinched spots in the NCAA Outdoor Championship Field will compete in the meet for the first time.
Five Wildcats have earned nine All-America honors in cross country and/or indoor track and field this campaign. UK has also picked up five individual SEC Championships during the 2012-13 season under first-year head coach Edrick Floreal.
The top eight finishers in each event earn points toward the overall team score. The points are assigned as follows: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
The Kentucky men finished tied for 43rd with five points in 2012. The Wildcat men’s All-Time high NCAA Outdoor Championship finish came in 2008 when UK placed ninth with 25 points.
The UK women’s team’s all-time best NCAA Outdoor Championship finish was a ninth-place, 18-point performance in 1989.
