Eight Wildcats to Compete at USA Track & Field Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa. – Eight current and former Kentucky Wildcats will compete for a spot on the most elite team in the sport of athletics this weekend at the United States Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The top three finishers in each event at the USA Outdoor Championships that have met the “A” qualifying standard in their respective events will earn the right to represent the U.S. in Moscow this summer.
The 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will feature live television coverage on the last three days of the competition. Friday’s action will air live on ESPN2 from 8-10 p.m. ET, while Saturday’s action will be broadcast on Universal Sports from 4-5 p.m. and NBC Sports Network from 5-7 p.m. Sunday’s finale will air on Universal Sports from 2-3 p.m., NBC Sports Network from 3-4 p.m. and NBC from 4-6 p.m.
USA Track & Field will also provide live streaming video at www.usatf.tv for selected events Thursday (1-7:20 p.m.), Friday (11 a.m.-10:25 p.m.), Saturday (7:30 a.m.-7 p.m.) and Sunday (8 a.m.-6 p.m.).
Four members of UK’s 2013 team – recent graduate Keith Hayes (110-meter hurdles), rising seniors Kayla Parker (100-meter hurdles) and Andrew Evans (discus) as well as rising sophomore Rebecca Famurewa (discus) – will compete on the Drake University campus.
Evans will look to continue the momentum from his NCAA Bronze Medal two weeks ago as he launched a personal best throw 62.78 meters / 206 feet to earn All-America status for the second consecutive season.
Hayes is coming off a fourth-place and First-Team All-America performance at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago where he set the all-conditions UK record 13.32 in the 110m hurdles. His prelim heat will feature 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist Jason Richardson in an overall field, which is highlighted by Olympic Gold Medalist and World-Record Holder Aries Merritt.
“Kayla Parker tied the all-conditions school-record herself two weeks ago in Eugene, Ore., as she ran 13.16 in the NCAA 100m hurdles semifinal to pick up All-America honors. She will make her USA Championship debut on Friday at 6:15 p.m. in preliminary heat one, which features amongst others 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist and 2012 Silver Medalist Dawn Harper.
Rebecca Famurewa, who was SEC Bronze Medalist and honorable mention All-America in 2013, will also make her debut appearance at the USA Championships
Four UK alumni – Sharif Webb (800m), Chase Madison (discus), Andy Fryman (hammer) and Kristen Smith (hammer) – will also compete inside Drake Stadium this weekend.
Webb placed 24th in the 800m first round with a time of 1:50.10.
Also in the USA Championship field was be current staff member and former All-American at Wisconsin Ann Detmer. The UK track and field graduate assistant ran 10:35.02 for 26th overall in the 3,000m steeplechase first round.
