FIU Posts Conference Win over Soccer

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Behind a goal in the first half and three in the second half, Florida International posted a 4-1 win over the Kentucky men’s soccer team, on a bitter Saturday night at the UK Soccer Complex.
Kentucky (4-8-2, 1-3-2 Conference USA) allowed a goal for the Panthers in the 27th minute from Marvin Hezel, off a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box. The Panthers got a goal in the 58th minute from Quentin Albrecht to get a two-goal margin, with Roberto Alterio getting goals in the 72nd and 78th minutes for the final FIU tallies. FIU (6-8-0, 2-2-2 C-USA) also used three-save outing from goalkeeper Daniel Mion for the league win.
The Wildcats got a goal from sophomore midfielder Isak Krogstad, his fourth of the year, in the 90th minute, with the native of Tromsoe, Norway, smashing home a 25-yard strike from the corner of the 18-yard box. Krogstad’s goal came with 34 seconds remaining in regulation, marking the sixth-latest goal in regulation in UK history.
The goal allowed by the Wildcats in the 26th minute snapped a streak of 305 consecutive minutes played without UK allowed an opponent to score, with UK allowing just an own goal in the Charlotte contest on Oct. 19 during the four-game span.
UK finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots, with UK also owning a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. FIU was called for offsides five times, with UK whistled four times.
Kentucky will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to face Marshall at 7 p.m. ET in Huntington, W.Va.
In the 27th minute, FIU mounted a run on the near side, forcing a free kick from the corner of the 18-yard box. Gonzalo Frechilla took the kick and lofted a ball into the top of the six-yard box. Hezel secured it and chested it in the net at the far post, pasting a diving Irving for his third goal of the year.
The Panthers got on the board in the 58th minute, as they mounted a run down the middle of the pitch. Alterio played a ball through the UK backline and into the six-yard box for Albrecht, who finished it at the near post for his sixth goal of the year.
FIU added to its lead in the 72nd minute, as ball was played through the FIU outside midfield and into the 18-yard box, where Alteiro finished it at the far post for his sixth goal of the year.
FIU added to its lead in the 78th minute, as Alteiro cleaned up a rebounded shot for his second goal of the game and his seventh of the year.
In the 90th minute, UK got on the board, as the Wildcats played a ball into the box that forced a Mion punch out from the top of the six-yard box. Krogstad found the ball that was punched out, firing a first-touch strike from 25 yards out for his fourth goal of the year.
GAME NOTES: Justin Laird, Charlie Reymann and Kristoffer Tollefsen were UK’s first subs of the game … Tollefsen returned to action for the first time since Oct. 8 vs. Evansville, missing the last four matches due to injury … The goal allowed by the Wildcats in the 27th minute marked the first goal UK had allowed by an opponent in a span of 305 minutes played … UK leads the all-time series with FIU, 6-3-1, including a 4-1 mark in Lexington … UK senior center back Steven Perinovic won 4-of-9 contested header attempts and has now won 110-of-141 on the year … Isak Krogstad netted his fourth goal of the year with 89:26 on the clock … Krogstad’s goal marked the sixth latest goal in regulation in UK soccer history.
