STATESBORO, Ga. – For the first time this season the University of Kentucky men’s golf team finished a tournament outside of the top five with an 11th place finish at the Schenkel Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Forest Heights Country Club. Kentucky finished the day with an eight-over par, 296.
The Wildcats final team score was 18-over par, 882. Georgia Southern won the team championship with a 14-under par, 850, while No. 14 UAB (-6), No. 6 UCF (-2), No. 10 Virginia (+4) and No. 15 Texas (+4) completed the top five. Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes won the individual title with a seven-under par, 209.
Rounding out the rest of the team standings were College of Charleston (+5), Georgia State (+7), Ole Miss (+11), North Florida (+12), North Carolina State (+17), Duke (+22), Florida (+26), North Texas (+34) and Maryland (+40).
“We had a chink in the armor this week, but I still love this team,” said Kentucky head coach Brian Craig. “This will help us in the long run and I look for a big bounce back at the Hootie event next week. Great work also by Stephen Powers and David Snyder for their continued solid play.”
UK collected a pair of top 10 individual places with senior Stephen Powers and junior David Snyder. Powers climbed into a tie for sixth place with a final score of two-under par, 214. Powers recorded his second straight round of under par play with a two-under par, 70. The Naperville, Ill., native ranked second out of all players in Par 5 scoring this weekend with a six-under par. He now has three top 10 finishes this season. Snyder collected an even par, 72, on Sunday to finish in a tie for 10th with a one-under par, 215. It marks his second top 10 placing of the season.
Senior Cody Martin tied for 65th with an 11-over par, 227, after shooting a six-over par, 78, in the final round. Junior Will Bishop registered a five-over par, 77, to finish the tournament 12-over par. Bishop tied for 71st.
It was a tough outing this weekend for senior Ben Stow who tied for 77th with a 14-over par, 230. Stow did not record an even par round or better for the first time this season after a five-over par, 77, on Sunday.
Playing as an individual, freshman Hager Collins finished the day with a five-over par, 77. Collins finished in 90th place with a 28-over par, 244.
