LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 34 University of Kentucky women’s tennis team fell to No. 6 University of Alabama, 4-0, Sunday at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Outdoor Tennis Center in the team’s final match at home this season.
The Crimson Tide edged the Wildcats for the doubles point and lead the overall match, 1-0. No. 70 Mary Anne Daines and Danielle Spielmann gave Alabama its first win of the day at No. 2 doubles. The duo defeated Nadia Ravita and Aldila Sutjiadi, 8-5. Alabama’s second win came over seniors Cece Witten and Caitlin McGraw. Witten and McGraw fell to No. 13 Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen, 8-5, and Alabama clinched the point.
Kentucky faced a 2-0 deficit after the Tide extended their lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 6 singles slot. Junior Kelsey Dieters was the second Wildcat to fall. Competing at the No. 3 singles position, Dieters tried to force a second set, but was defeated, 7-5, 6-3 by Routliffe. Alabama took the match following a win at No. 2 singles. Sutjiadi battled hard, but couldn’t overcome Spielmann. Spielmann edged the freshman, 7-5, 6-3.
Kentucky will finish the season on the road, with their first contest coming against No. 10 Vanderbilt. The Wildcats will head to Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, April 5 to take on the Commodores. The match begins at 12 p.m. ET.
