Macumber Wins Penn Relays 5k Championship

PHILADELPHIA – A pair of distance runners from the sixth-ranked Kentucky women’s track and field team enjoyed a banner evening at the 120th running of the University of Pennsylvania Relays Carnival at Historic Franklin Field on Thursday.
Cally Macumber solidified her return to form by winning the Penn Relays 5,000 meters championship with a time of 16:07.21. Macumber displayed her signature kick at the bell as she made up a 60m deficit all within the final lap.
Macumber became UK’s first-ever Penn Relays 5k champion, and the time ranks fourth in the Southeastern Conference.
Amy Hansen also impressed on Thursday evening, placing sixth in the Penn Relays 3k steeplechase championship with a school-record breaking time of 10:32.73. Hansen, a freshman, bettered Andrea Halasek’s previous UK record by more than three seconds.
The women’s 4x400m relay team of Dezerea Bryant, Alisha Adair, Kenyattia Hackworth and Angelica Whaley advanced to the Saturday Championship of America Final in sixth place with a time of 3:37.84.
Adam Kahleifehstarted the final Penn Relays of his collegiate career strong with a fourth place finish in the 5k. His time of 14:03.48 was a personal best by more than nine seconds.

Mackay Wilson finished ninth in the 3k steeplechase with a time of 9:05.55. Spencer Hrycay placed second in the second heat, and 11th overall, with a PR time of 9:09.24 in just his second ever steeplechase.
Hiruni Wijayaratne ran a season-best 5k time of 17:17.00 to place 23rd in the Olympic development division.
UK’s 4x100m relay had a disappointing result as they ran 45.67 and did not qualify for the Championship of America final. They will have a chance at redemption when they compete in the college division on Friday.
Sha’Keela Saunders jumped 5.81m (19-0.75) to place 11th in the championship division long jump. Kenyattia Hackworth jumped 5.75m (18-10.5), placing 13th in the college division.
Zack Beavin ran a 10k PR 30:31.42 to conclude the Thursday night distance carnival at Penn Relays.
The Penn Relays will continue on Friday and Saturday, while UK’s throwers will begin competition at the Triton Invitational on Friday.
