LEXINGTON, Ky.  – Seven University of Kentucky swimming and diving student-athletes were named Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, adding to an impressive list of academic honors by the women’s team to close the 2013-14 season.

Juniors Christina Becthel, Christa Cabot and Abby Myers and freshman Danielle Galyer earned First Team Scholar All-America honors, while freshmen Kelly Berger, Kendal Casey and Kendra Crew each were named to the Honorable Mention team, announced by the CSCAA today.

The Scholar All-America accolades come a week after the UK women’s team earned the best grade-point average among all Division I men’s and women’s teams and was named one of the 2014 Spring CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams. Its 3.728 GPA was also the highest among all University of Kentucky teams this spring.

“This is a tremendous honor for all seven student-athletes and is great recognition for a lot of hard work and dedication,” UK head coach Lars Jorgensen said. “They are all well-deserving and have excelled both in the pool and in the classroom. Each of them represent this university, UK Athletics and the team very well day in and day out.”

The Scholar All-America award is presented to swimmers and divers who have achieved a cumulative or term GPA of 3.5 or higher and have qualified for and competed at the NCAA Championship. The Honorable Mention award is given to student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative or semester GPA of 3.5 and have achieved an NCAA “B” time standard but did not compete at the national championship. Divers qualify by competing at the NCAA Zone Championships.

At the NCAA Championships, Cabot earned two All-America honors with a pair of top-11 finishes in the diving events. Bechtel was named All-American for the first time in her career when she notched a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a school-record time, while Myers was named Honorable Mention All-American when she finished 12th in the 200 butterfly.

All four members of UK’s women’s team that competed at the NCAA Championship, including Galyer, were named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.

Also this spring, Myers was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District® At-Large Team. An Honorable Mention All-American this season, Myers was one of 10 honorees on the Division I team in District 2 and just one of six women’s swimmers from the Southeastern Conference to be named to an Academic All-District team.

The UK women placed 23rd at the NCAA Championships, their highest finish at the national championship since 2008.
