SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Washington Huskies in Friday night’s season-opening match at the Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle, Wash. UW got three goals in the opening frame and added on an insurance goal in the second half to record the win.
Washington got on the board first with an 11th-minute goal from Jaclyn Softli as she capitalized on a UK turnover in midfield and then was 1v1 with the keeper from 20 yards out. She then deposited it into the back of the net and it gave UW the 1-0 lead.
The Huskies then doubled their lead in the 16th minute as Becca Schoales scored on a cross from Kate Bennett to put UW up 2-0. Bennett got end line down the right side of the Wildcats defense and served a cross into the far post which was touched home to Taylor Braun’s right side for the goal.
Arin Gilliland scored the next goal in the match just five minutes later, as she whipped a long-range shot from the left side of the field into the right-side netting for the goal. Gilliland’s goal came in the 21st minute as she was lifting a service ball to the far post and it ended up going over Washington goalkeeper Megan Kufeld’s head and into the far-post netting.
Washington then responded with a goal against the run of play 13 minutes later as Kimberly Keever put home a cross from the far side of the field to give UW the 3-1 lead.
As the teams went to the locker room, the Huskies had the 3-1 lead, with UK drawing back even on shots, as the teams finished 7-7 in shots, and UK leading the half 2-1 on corner kicks. UK keeper Braun recorded one save in the opening frame.
UW would add a fourth goal in the match in the 69th minute as Amanda Perez scored one-touch in front of goal on an end-line cross that got through the teeth of the UK defense.
Kentucky will look for its first win of the season on Sunday as the weekend wraps up with a 3 p.m. ET match with Seattle University at Championship Field on the campus of Seattle U.
