LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team extended its season-high winning streak to five matches on Sunday night as the Wildcats shutout the Morehead State Eagles with three first-half goals to win the match 3-0 at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
“Morehead State exposed some of the small details that we need to fix,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said after his fifth-straight win. “We knew with it being an in-state school, they were going to throw everything they had at us. We have some things that we need to clean up and we also need to rest some before next weekend. Pepperdine is top-10 in the country and a fantastic team and we need to be ready for them next weekend.”
Kentucky (5-1-0, 0-0-0 SEC) has now gone 376 consecutive minutes of action without allowing a goal in any match – a streak that spans over the last five contests for the Wildcats. The last team to net a ball past Taylor Braun or Ayanna Parker was Seattle U’s 90th-minute equalizer in the second match of the season.
Braun, a freshman keeper for the Wildcats, now has recorded four-straight clean sheets in the net for UK and added three saves on Sunday night, keeping the Eagles scoreless. The Colleyville, Texas, native has 12 saves on the season, and a GAA of 0.86 after allowing four goals in the season’s opening match at Seattle. Braun’s GAA the last five matches is 0.21, with nine saves in 430 minutes of action and four clean sheets.
Sophomore Jade Klump opened the scoring in the match in the seventh minute as the Pacific, Mo., native beat the keeper to the right and slotted the ball into the back of the net from seven yards out. Klump gathered the thru ball from Arin Gilliland about 20 yards from goal down the right side and beat the keeper before passing it into the goal. The goal for Klump was her third on the season, a new career-high, and for Gilliland, her team-leading fifth assist on the season.
UK would double its lead in the ninth minute, just two minutes later as Olivia Jester scored her second-career goal from 45 yards out on a long-lifted ball that was bobbled by the Morehead State keeper and rolled into the back of the net. The goal for the Cincinnati, Ohio native was her first of the season and unassisted. The last time Jester scored a goal was Oct. 21, 2012 as she scored the game-winner against Auburn in the 54th minute.
Michaela Dooley would continue her career-best weekend with her second goal of the weekend, and third goal of the season in the 31st minute to put UK up 3-0. Dooley, who scored the game-winner against rival Louisville on Friday night, and also had an assist on the second goal of the match in the Derby City buried a cross from Maddie Lockridge, who tallied the assist along with Allie Gorgol. For both Gorgol and Lockridge, who are both juniors, it was their first-career points in the Blue and White. Dooley has now scored in three matches running and is second on the team with 10 points this season, only trailing Gilliland, who has 11.
Kentucky outshot Morehead State (3-1-2, 0-0-0 OVC) 18-8 on the night, with UK putting seven shots on frame to the Eagles’ three. UK had three corner kicks in the match, while holding MSU to just two.
Kentucky will have next Friday night off before returning to action on Sunday, Sept. 14 at Noon ET, as the Wildcats will faced top-10 ranked Pepperdine.
