LEXINGTON, Ky. – Arin Gilliland scored with 28 seconds left on the clock in regulation to tie the match at two apeiece with No. 12 Pepperdine and force overtime, but the Waves scored two minutes into the extra frame and grabbed the win over the No. 24 University of Kentucky women’s soccer team on Sunday at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
Gilliland went 1v1 with the Pepperdine outside back for a long battle and then was able to cut back inside and put in a beautiful finish to the keeper’s right and far post to tie the match with 28 seconds left in regulation. The goal for Gilliland was her fourth of the season, as she now leads the Wildcats with 18 points on the season.
Pepperdine’s MAC Hermann Award Finalist, Lynn Williams scored the game-winning goal on the counterattack in the 92nd minute as Meagan Harbison tabbed the assist, and the Wildcats fell 3-2 in overtime.
Williams scored the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute as she countered again and beat Taylor Braun to her right and finished with pace into the side netting.
Pepperdine opened the scoring in the 21st minute with Rylee Baisden’s first goal of the season giving the Waves the 1-0 lead. The match would go to halftime at 1-0, but UK leading in almost every statistical category, which would tell the tale of most of the match.
Kentucky finished with a 19-9 edge in shots, 10-5 lead in shots on goal, and 5-3 edge in corner kicks. The Wildcats also forced Waves goalkeeper Hannah Seabert to make a season-high eight saves in Sunday’s match.
The Wildcats squared the match at 1-1 when junior Kelli Hubly scored her first goal of the season in the 61st minute after countless UK scoring chances. Hubly stuck out her boot on a cross from Gilliland and the cross had beat the keeper, allowing Hubly to poke it into an open net for the goal. The entry ball came in from Michaela Dooley to Gilliland for the double-assist.
Kentucky returns to action on Friday night as it opens Southeastern Conference play at Razorback Field in Fayetteville, Ark., as UK faces off against the Arkansas Razorbacks, who have been in the top 25 for most of the 2014 season.
