FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., and AMES, Iowa, and BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With two weeks to go until Kentucky hosts the 2015 Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships, the Wildcats will seek to round into form at meets across the country this weekend.
The second full weekend of February traditionally features competitive meets with fields dominant in just a few particular track and field disciplines. Such is the case as teams seek the competitive environments that so often produce top results, thus increasing the likelihood of attaining NCAA Championship-qualifying times/marks. This weekend is no exception.
The nation’s top sprinters, jumpers and throwers have flocked to Arkansas’ Randall Tyson Track Center, and the steep banked turns of its 200-meter track, for the Tyson Invitational. Headlining for Kentucky at Tyson on Friday will be a pair of field-eventers.
Sha’Keela Saunders posted the nation’s leading long jump mark in January at home, only to be eclipsed last weekend by a single centimeter by Georgia’s collegiate-record holding pentathlete Kendell Williams. The two will be joined by a full field of elite jumpers beginning at 7 p.m. ET on Friday.
Rebecca Famurewa, the nation’s No. 8 in the nation in the weight throw this season. She will but part of a field filled with eight top-20 throwers in the country beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
Leah Nugent, currently ranked No. 12 in the NCAA in the 60m hurdles will be part of a field that features nine hurdlers currently ranked on the NCAA top-20 performance list.
Middle distance standout Keffri Neal, undefeated in 2015 and the defending SEC 800m Champion, will debut in the mile on the oversized track at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday at 2:50 p.m. ET. Eight sub-four minute milers are entered into the field, not including Neal, whose mile personal best is 4:04.04, but ran a sub-4 mile leg in the 4xmile relay Championship of America at last season’s Penn Relays. Neal is also the defending SEC 1,500m Champion.
Kentucky has sent the lions’ share of its vertical jumpers and multi-eventers to Indiana’s Hoosier Hills Invitational on Friday.
UK’s multi-eventers, including current NCAA No. 15 heptathlete Timothy Duckworth and defending SEC Heptathlon Silver Medalist Ibn Short, are scheduled for tune ups in just a few events ahead of their seven events in two days come the SEC Championships.
Also scheduled to compete in Bloomington are pole vaulters Michelle Canterna and Charles Moushey as well as high jumper Justin Kretchmer.
The Tyson Invitational will be broadcast on SEC Network+ on Saturday. The Iowa State Classic will be broadcast via Flotrack.com.
