No. 22 Women's Tennis Downs Tennessee to Cap SEC Roadtrip
March 15, 2015
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 22 Kentucky women’s tennis closed its first roadtrip of Southeastern Conference play with a 4-3 victory at Tennessee on Sunday.
The Wildcats (11-6, 2-2 SEC) lost the doubles point, but came back to win the first three singles matches before the Volunteers (8-9, 0-5 SEC) tied the match at 3-3. Kelsey Dieters prevailed at No. 4 singles though to give the Wildcats the 4-3 victory.
“We did not do a good job adjusting to playing outside in doubles and came out very flat,” volunteer assistant coach Gabby Rangel said. “But when we went out for singles, we had a couple of girls go out there and take care of business in a very convincing way. I am really proud of Kelsey for coming back from 4-1 down in the last match when things got tough. She never stopped believing and remained very disciplined all the way. The girls can learn from the resiliency Kelsey showed today.”
Dieters won the first set, 7-6 (10-8) over Laurence Guevremont. After a marathon first set, Guevremont claimed the second set, 6-4 to send the match to a third and deciding set. With the match tied at 3-3 and the winner of the contest claiming the match for their team, Dieters earned a 6-4 victory.
“I am so happy that I was able to help contribute to our win today,” Dieters said. “I kept fighting for my team and never gave up. We are very excited to bring home a win and we look forward to competing again on Friday.”
After UK lost the doubles point, the Wildcats stormed back to win the first three singles matches. Kirsten Lewis posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles and Aldila Sutjiadi earned a 6-4, 6-3 win on court No. 2. UK took a 3-1 lead when No. 111 Mami Adachi won on court three, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2).
Tennessee won the next two singles matches, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 over No. 85 Nadia Ravita at No. 1 singles, and 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-4 over Taylor Lederman on court No. 6.
With the match tied at 3-3, it was Dieters at No. 4 singles to break the tie and give UK its fourth and final point of the contest.
The Wildcats are back home on Feb. 20 when they host Arkansas at 6 p.m. ET. UK concludes the weekend vs. Mizzou on Sunday at Noon ET.
