STATESBORO, Ga. – Led by a career-low round from sophomore Stephen Stallings, the Kentucky men’s golf team wrapped up the opening 18 holes of the Schenkel Invitational tied for seventh place. Stallings posted a team-best 4-under par round to finish in a tie for fourth overall on the individual leaderboard.
“The course was there for the taking today with very soft conditions and almost no wind,” UK coach Brian Craig said. “We had a solid round going for most of the day, but did not finish it off. Stephen Stallings played very well and is really developing into a terrific player. We have 36 holes tomorrow and will be ready to play our best.”
The Wildcats concluded the day with a collective 3-under par round of 285. It was the second-lowest round of the season for Kentucky. Vanderbilt leads the field with a 15-under par score through 18 holes. Auburn, Wake Forest, N.C. State, Georgia Southern and Florida round out the top six.
Stallings posted a 4-under par 68 to lead the way for the Wildcats besting his season-low round of 71. The sophomore from Louisville, Ky., was joined in the red numbers by junior David Snyder who fired a 1-under par 71. Stallings currently sits in a tie for fourth place on the individual leaderboard, while Snyder is tied for 31st. Stallings charted a team-best six birdies on the afternoon including on the 18th hole. He opened his round with four 1-under scores through the opening nine holes.
Junior Harrison Greenberry scored an even-par 72 through the opening 18 holes of play. He sits in a tie for 38th. Freshmen Tyler `Chip’ McDaniel and Cooper Musselman both carded 2-over par 74s. The duo sits in a tie for 62nd.
Due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday, the tournament hosts have determined the field will play 36 holes on Saturday to conclude the tournament. The teams will begin the day with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET.
