BATON ROUGE, La. – Faced with yet another difficult field, with nine teams ranked in the top 50 in the country, the Kentucky women’s golf team sits in a tie for 11th place after the opening 18 holes at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La.
Paced by junior Sarah Harris, the Wildcats posted a 28-over-par 316 on day one of the 54-hole tournament. Kentucky is one shot ahead of the 10th-ranked team in the country, Wake Forest.
“This is one of our favorite tournaments of the year,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “The golf course is challenging and the field is solid. We had a tough time today and the greens really got the best of us. However, we are hitting the ball well and we worked hard on our putting after the round so I know the team is ready to get after it tomorrow.”
The beautiful University Club, which was recently redesigned by PGA major champion David Toms, got the best of the 16-team field on Friday as no team shot under par. The host team, No. 6 LSU, leads the tournament at nine-over par, with TCU (12-over par), Tulane (14-over par), Denver (15-over par) and No. 11 Mississippi State (18-over par) close behind.
Harris, who posted the best finish at Kentucky’s last tournament, the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, once again led the Wildcats with a steady four-over-par 76. The Hermitage, Tenn., native carded two of UK’s four birdies on the day and is four shots off the lead.
Freshman Grace Rose and sophomores Haley Mills and Ale Walker all sit at eight-over par after day one of the tournament and in a tie for 48th.
Sophomore Megan Kinney, making her first appearance in a tournament since the Windy City Classic in the beginning of October, fired a 14-over 86. She’s in a tie for 83rd.
Play will resume with 18 more holes on Saturday at the 6,251-yard, par-72 University Club. Kinney will get things started for UK on Saturday with a 10:10 a.m. tee time on No. 10.
