GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Kentucky women’s golf team is on pace to get its third top-10 finish of the year after the first day of play at the Bryan National Collegiate on Friday. The Wildcats are currently in a tie for seventh at 16-over-par and are only one of two teams not ranked top 50 nationally that sit inside the top 10 after the first 18 holes.
Kentucky leads five of the 11 teams ranked in the top 50 that are competing this weekend, including No. 9 Northwestern, and has three individuals in the top 35.
“We had a solid start to the tournament today,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “The course showed its teeth through the back nine around the lake and I thought the girls handled those holes with poise. They fought hard and stayed aggressive throughout the day as the wind picked up. Sarah Harris really stepped up for us today. I believe she learned a lot at LSU and I am proud of her for applying it to her game today.”
Course conditions were tough on Friday, as they always are at this event. No team scored better than nine-over-par. Leading the field is No. 12 Virginia, followed by host team No. 13 Wake Forest (10-over-par), No. 34 Auburn (11-over-par), No. 18 Vanderbilt (12-over-par), and No. 19 Florida and Michigan State, both at 14-over-par.
Harris led the way for the Wildcats on Friday after firing an even-par 72, which puts her in her highest held position of the year, in a tie for fourth place. She is only three shots off the lead as her steady round only had two bogies, one on each side. This is also Harris’s best first round performance in an event this season.
Playing in her third collegiate tournament, freshman Isabelle Johansson is off to her best career start as she sits in a tie for 26th at four-over-par. Sophomore Haley Mills finished her opening round at five-over-par and is in a tie for 31st. Mills is looking to earn her sixth top-20 finish of the year at the event.
Grace Rose is coming off her highest career finish and lowest round last week at the LSU Tiger Classic and is in the top 50 after a seven-over-par performance on the Champions Course. Cylia Damerau, playing in her first event since the UCF Challenge, currently sits in a tie for 88th.
Play will resume with 18 more holes Saturday at the Champions Course. Damerau will get things started for UK at 8:20 a.m. ET. The Wildcats will be paired with players from No. 9 Northwestern and in-state rival No. 41 Louisville.
