COLUMBIA, S.C. — The No. 20 Kentucky women’s tennis team lost a top-25 matchup in the second round of the SEC Tournament, 4-0 to No. 22 Ole Miss.
The Wildcats and Rebels, two of seven teams in this year’s SEC Tournament ranked in the top 25, played through several weather delays during Thursday’s action. There were four delays, including having to move indoors shortly after singles began. Rain and mist were the major factors that affected the delays. The match, with delays and moving indoors, lasted four hours and 10 minutes.
Kentucky started out slow at doubles with a loss on court two, but rebounded shortly after with a win at court three from seniors Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff and Kelsey Dieters. Ole Miss came away with the doubles point however, as the Rebels clinched the point at No. 1 doubles.
Shortly following doubles were two more rain delays. A decision was then reached to move the singles competition indoors.
After moving to the indoor facility, Erin Stephens of Ole Miss gave Mami Adachi just her sixth loss of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Adachi’s record moved to 16-6 in her first season at UK.
Ole Miss has the 11th-ranked individual in the ITA rankings in Julia Jones. Aldila Sutjiadi, who has been battling an ankle injury, came up short to Jones 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
The Wildcats’, Nadia Ravita, ranked No. 63 in the nation, fell to Mai El Kamash at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Kamash’s win clinched the 4-0 victory for Ole Miss.
Kentucky now awaits selections for the NCAA Championships. The Wildcats are expected to earn their second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. NCAA Regionals are held May 8-10 at campus sites.
