Abby Steiner Repeats as SEC Women’s Co-Runner of the Week
LEXINGTON, Kentucky – If this announcement seems familiar, it’s only because it is — Kentucky’s Abby Steiner was named Southeastern Conference Women’s Co-Runner of the Week for the second week in a row, the league office announced Tuesday.
A junior from Dublin, Ohio, Steiner zipped 200 meters in 22.52 seconds Saturday at Clemson’s Tiger Paw Invitational – breaking her own school record with a clocking that leads the nation and is second in the world this season. That time also broke the facility record at the Clemson Indoor Complex and ties for 10th in NCAA history.
On Friday, Steiner reset her personal best in the 60m dash at 7.21 seconds, the nation’s sixth best time this season and fifth in Kentucky history.
Steiner was named co-winner along with Grace Stark of Florida, who logged an NCAA-leading time of 7.96 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles at the Tyson Invitational. That time ranks tied for 11th in the world this season.
Steiner also was named SEC Co-Runner of the Week following her three-win performance Feb. 6 at the South Carolina Invitational. She swept the sprint double in the 60-meter and 200m dashes and ran a leg on the victorious 4×400-meter relay. Coming into the meet with the nation’s best time in the 200, her clocking of 22.69 seconds improved the time further and set the facility record at the South Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex. Earlier that day, Steiner blazed the straightaway with a time of 7.24 seconds to win the 60m. The day was capped in the 4x400m relay, as Megan Moss, Steiner, Masai Russell and Dajour Miles stormed the oval in a time of 3:32.41. Steiner posted the fastest leg with 51.75 seconds.
The Wildcats are off from competition this week as they prepare for the Southeastern Conference Championships (Feb. 25-27) and the NCAA Championships (March 11-13), both of which will be held at the University of Arkansas.
