Three Men’s Golf Players Honored by SEC

by Deb Moore

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three University of Kentucky men’s golfers were honored by the Southeastern Conference in the league’s annual awards on Thursday. Senior Lukas Euler was tabbed an All-SEC Second Team selection, freshman Cullan Brown earned a spot on the All-SEC Freshman Team and sophomore Jacob Cook was chosen for the SEC Community Service Team.

The honors are the first of each player’s careers. Euler is UK’s first member of an All-SEC team since Chip McDaniel was also a second-team selection in 2016. Brown is Kentucky’s first honoree on the All-SEC Freshman Team since McDaniel in 2015.

Kentucky enjoyed another successful season in 2018-19 in which the Cats placed third during stroke play of the SEC Championship and advanced to match play for the first time in the tournament’s format. The Wildcats earned a spot in the NCAA Regional in Athens, Georgia, marking the fourth straight season Brian Craig’s squad has moved on to postseason play.

Lukas Euler

Euler enjoyed one of the most prolific seasons in Craig’s tenure with six top-20 finishes during his senior season as well as participating in two professional events.

The Dieburg, Germany, native registered a career-low 71.74 stroke average. That mark also topped the team for the 2018-19 season. Euler’s biggest achievement during his senior campaign was becoming the low-stroke winner at the Genesis Open Collegiate Showcase in February which allowed him to earn an exemption into the PGA Genesis Open. Euler claimed the spot behind a career-low round of 67. He also advanced to a pro event on the European Tour after earning qualification with a win in a playoff at the Dutch Amateur in August.

He matched that mark twice more during the season, including during the second round of the SEC Championship. Euler’s tie for ninth in that event helped the Wildcats to a third-place showing during stroke play and advance to match play in the event for the first time in program history. Euler then won both of his head-to-head matchups during match play, the only Wildcat to achieve that standard.

Euler also recorded a round of 67 during the opening day of play at the General Hackler. That paved the way for a runner-up finish in the event as well as a season-low 54-hole total of 206. His runner-up finish in the event matched a career-low finish.

Other top-20 finishes included a tie for 13th at The Grove, a tie for 14th at Shoal Creek and a tie for 19th at the Steelwood Invitational.

Euler posted a team-high 18 par or better rounds and his round counted in more than 90 percent of his rounds played this season. He concludes his career with 20 top-20 finishes and 55 par or better rounds in more than 115 career rounds played.

Cullan Brown

Brown missed the entire fall as he recovered from injury and returned in the spring and appeared in all eight events. He owned a 72.42 stroke average during his freshman campaign while earning four top-20 finishes.

The Eddyville, Kentucky, native boasted a team-best round of 64 during the opening round of the Mason Rudolph. The score matched a Craig-era program record for any player. That spearheaded a career-low finish of a tie for fifth and matched Euler’s team-low 54-hole total of 206.

Brown also garnered a top-10 finish at the SEC Championship when he matched Euler with a tie for ninth. He had rounds of 67-69-72 during stroke play and then won his first match play pairing to help Kentucky down then No. 22 Tennessee.

He also had top-20 finishes at the Schenkel Invitational and at Shoal Creek. During his freshman season, Brown registered 10 par or better rounds, one top-five finish, two top-10 finishes and in half of his starts he was a top-20 finisher.

Cook was recognized for his outstanding efforts away from the course and the classroom after leading the team in total hours served in the community.

The sophomore from Frankfort, Kentucky, is a two-time Academic All-SEC selection and has participated in eight career tournaments.

In the community, Cook has participated in various activities including Breakfast with Santa, bowling with Special Olympics participants, he’s cooked and served dinner at the Ronald McDonald House and he’s packed and delivered food as a part of the God’s Pantry Backpack Program.

This summer, he participated in the PGA’s Barbasol community event at the UK Children’s Hospital. Cook played a round of mini-golf setup throughout the hospital with patients, in addition to visiting with the children. He was also a participant in the Schenkel Golf Tournament’s annual clinic prior to participating in the event this fall.
