Mehles Goes Under Par to Lead Wildcats in Round One
AWENDAW, S.C. – Senior Max Mehles carded a 1-under 71 to lead the way for the Kentucky men’s golf team during the opening round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, an event the Wildcats are competing in for the 15th consecutive season.
Bulls Bay Golf Club is playing over a three-day, 54-hole span. It’s a par 72 course and 7,316 yards this week for the 15 team field.
Mehles began his round with three successive birdies to get his round going in a hurry. Bogeys on the fourth and fifth were offset with back-to-back birdies at the par-four eighth and ninth. After the turn, Mehles dropped two more shots before finishing the round with a birdie on the 16th to maintain the under-par scorecard. He is tied for 22nd on the individual leaderboard entering Monday’s second round. Today’s under-par scorecard was the seventh par-or-better round of the season for Mehles.
Kentucky is tied for 14th overall with NC State following a 3-over day. South Carolina and Missouri are the clubhouse leaders at 9-under par as the entire field is within 12 shots of one another. Kent State is third, while Kansas and College of Charleston round out the top five. Kentucky is a mere six shots back of a top-five finish.
Senior Lukas Euler and junior Matt Liston are tied at 40 following a 1-over opening round. Euler had three birdies on the back nine to finish his day with some momentum. Liston also played well after the turn with a 2-under scorecard over the final nine holes.
Freshman Cullan Brown is tied for 51st with a round of 74. He had a trio of birdies, including one at the par-four 16th to finish his day in positive fashion. Senior Fred Allen Meyer had a 75 and is tied for 61st. He had four birdies on the day, including ones on back-to-back holes at the 10th and 11th.
