Road Swing Ends with No. 21 Kentucky at No. 29 Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Riding the coattails of a road upset at No. 19 LSU on Friday, the 21st-ranked UK women’s tennis team will look to protect its 6-0 note over ranked opponents when it confronts No. 29 Texas A&M on Sunday, a noon first serve in College Station, Texas. The Southeastern Conference dual match will end UK’s four straight road bouts.
Forming a 14-2 season (SEC 4-1), UK tied its wins earned in 2017-18 when the program went 14-11 overall. Meanwhile, seven dual matches and a hopeful postseason run remain uncontested.
The 14th victory did not come easy, as Kentucky rallied from behind to defeat LSU on the road in a 4-3 outcome. Losing the doubles point for only the fourth time this season, UK pieced together four successful singles wins on its way to its first upset of the year.
Two match upsets highlighted the league dual, led by No. 55 Justina Mikulskyte and Akvile Paražinskaite who defeated Eden Richardson and Jessica Golovin on the No. 1 doubles court, the No. 3 duo in the nation and 2018 NCAA Doubles National Champions. Mikulskyte used that momentum to rattle the singles division, when she defeated Richardson on singles court one. Mikulskyte, senior, is the 48th-best singles player in the nation, while Richardson is No. 15.
The UK duo in Mikulskyte and Paražinskaite are riding a four-match win streak and are unbeaten against ranked foes, 4-0. Mikulskyte is 4-1 against ranked opponents in singles matches.
Different to the singles lineup this weekend, Lesedi Jacobs moved up one spot in singles. Traditionally the No. 3 player, the redshirt-sophomore competed on court two vs. LSU. The Namibia native finished first in the division, defeating her opponent by a 6-1, 6-1 decision. Meanwhile, Jacobs is on a seven-match win streak.
Jacobs is projected to play on court No. 2 again on Sunday. Live scoring will be provided at StatBroadcast.com.
Kentucky leads Texas A&M in all-time meetings, 12-6. The Aggies (15-3, SEC 3-2) have one doubles pair in the national rankings in No. 31 Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova. Goldsmith is also the 100th-ranked singles player in the nation.
