LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky baseball legend Andy Green – a 2015 inductee into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame – has been named the manager of the San Diego Padres, it was announced at a press conference at Petco Park on Thursday evening.
Green, who starred at UK from 1997-2000 after a high school career at Lexington’s Christian Academy, joins the Padres after serving as the Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach in 2015. A two-time Southern League Manager of the Year (double-A), Green played four MLB seasons with the Diamondbacks and the New York Mets.
During his decorated collegiate career, Green set five school records, including hits (277), runs (199), games played (228), games started (225) and at-bats (908). He also ranks among the top 10 in UK history in total bases, sacrifice bunts and steals.
An Academic All-America selection and a four-year member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, Green was a 24th round draft selection of the Diamondbacks in the 2000 MLB Draft.
As a UK freshman in 1997, Green started 54 of UK’s 55 games, hitting .288 with seven doubles, six homers, 29 RBI and 11 steals. In 1998, Green hit .291 in 56 games with four homers, 32 RBI and 13 steals. After a .270 average with a homer, 22 RBI and 21 steals as a junior, Green helped UK to 38 wins in 2000. While playing with UK greats John Wilson, Aaron McGlone, Vince Harrison, Brandon Webb and Joe Blanton, Green led the team with a .368 average, slugging 11 homers and 18 doubles, driving in 45 runs and stealing 27 bases.
Green retired from his playing career after the 2010 minor-league season, after playing in 140 big-league games over four seasons. He opened his MLB career with 46 games for the Diamondbacks in 2004, also playing parts of the 2005 and 2006 seasons with the club. After playing 2007 in Japan, Green returned to play in the Cincinnati Reds and Mets organizations from 2008-10, reaching the big leagues with the Mets in 2009.
