Meyer Paces Wildcats in Opening Round of Cardinal Challenge

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Senior Fred Allen Meyer was the low scorer on the first day of the Louisville Cardinal Challenge for the Kentucky men’s golf team on Friday. The Nicholasville, Kentucky, native fired a round of 2-under to pace the Cats in the season-opening tournament.
Meyer notched four birdies on the day, including a pair on the front nine to enter the clubhouse tied for 16th. Kentucky is tied for 11th following the opening 18 holes at 2-over par. UK is within nine shots of the top five heading into the second round on Saturday. The Cats will tee off their beginning at 9:12 a.m. ET.
The course is set up as a par-71, 7,101-yard event. The field is comprised of two teams in the top 20 in the preseason Golfstat.com rankings. Six programs are rated among the top 50.
Senior Fadhli Soetarso matched the best round of his collegiate career with a 1-under 70. He is tied for 32nd. He played both the front nine and the back nine at 1-under par. His front nine included a trio of birdies at the par-four second, the par-five fifth and the par-four sixth.
Sophomore Jacob Cook turned in the best round of his young career, matching Soetarso’s 70. Cook, playing as an individual, is tied for 32nd. The highlight of his round was an eagle at the par-four second when he holed it in with his approach shot.
Junior Matt Liston is tied for 47th and enters the second day of action with a bit of momentum after going into the clubhouse with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. He shot a 1-over 72 for the day.
Senior Max Mehles registered a 75 and junior Allen Hamilton logged a 76 on the opening day. The duo is tied for 76th and 82nd, respectively.
Play resumes at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday as the 16-team field will play another round of 18. Tee times for Sunday will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET. Live stats are available via Golfstat.com.
Duke is the clubhouse leader after round one. Wake Forest and the host Cardinals of Louisville are tied for second. South Florida and Western Kentucky are tied for fourth to round out the top five of the leaderboard.
Senior Lukas Euler finished his run at the KLM Open with a 2-over par on Friday. He tied for 127th at 6-over for the tournament. Euler qualified for the European Tour event with a win at the Dutch Amateur this summer.
