LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior Makayla Epps recorded the second triple-double in program history on Wednesday night at Memorial Coliseum as the University of Kentucky women’s basketball team beat the Morehead State Eagles 112-57.
With the win, UK stays perfect at 3-0 on the season. MSU falls to 2-1, sufferings its first defeat of the year.
Epps had six points, eight rebounds and nine assists at the half, needing just four points, two rebounds and one assist in the second half to earn the triple-double. The school’s only other triple-double came in 1986 by Leslie Nichols vs. Louisville on Valentine’s Day.
It was a statistical historical night for UK as three players recorded a double-double. In addition to Epps, junior Evelyn Akhator had 12 points and16 boards, while Alexis Jennings had a career night, scoring 26 points and adding in 11 rebounds.
Kentucky’s Janee Thompson, who had 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor, finished one assist shy of becoming the fourth player to record a double-double.
UK also went hard to the glass, recording 67 rebounds, with 22 of them offensive and 45 defensive, which tied a program record set in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament against Wright State.
Kentucky jumped out to a 27-12 lead in the first quarter and then extended it to a 54-32 lead at the half thanks to 20-of-45 shooting from the floor and 3-of-10 from the 3-point area. Kentucky made 43 baskets on 32 assists, which was just one off the school record for assists in a single game.
UK dominated the paint, scoring an presented 70 of its 112 points in the paint, compared to just 22 in the paint. That also equated to 14 second-chance points while the defense was stifling, holding the Eagles down to 25.6 percent from the floor, a season low for UK opponents.
Kentucky never trailed in the game.
