GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kentucky’s women’s 4×100-meter and 4x400m relays swept the Florida Relays with some of the top times in the nation on Saturday.
Faith Ross, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Sydney McLaughlin and Kayelle Clarke shattered the school record running an NCAA leading 4x400m relay time of 3:26.92 to win by more than a second.
UK was even with Purdue, which ended up second in 3:28.52, through two legs and then McLaughlin ran a 49.45 third leg, more than three seconds faster than the Boilermakers’ third leg to give Kayelle Clarke a big lead on the anchor leg, which she brought home in 52.72.
The UK women’s 4x100m relay, which returned three of four legs of from the 2017 NCAA Champion squad, won against a tough field with a time that makes UK the No. 2-ranked 4×1 in the nation this year.
Freshman Celera Barnes led off before passing to Camacho-Quinn, Clarke and Kianna Gray as they cruised to a winning time of 43.13, which ranks No. 6 on the UK all-time list. Only LSU has run faster this time, having gone as fast as 42.65 this season.
Noah Castle placed fourth in the men’s discus with a mark of 190’1″/57.95m, a nine-foot personal best, which moved him to No. 8 on the all-time list.
Matt Peare tied the UK freshman pole vault record, getting over the bar at 17’1.50″/5.22m to place fourth and move into a tie for No. 3 UK all-time list.
Charles Lenford Jr. placed sixth in the men’s invitational shot put with a mark of 59’0.75″/18.0m, a bit more than three inches shy of his personal best.
Latavia Coombs took fifth place in the triple jump with a mark of 42’4.75″/12.92m (-1.0).
Ellen Ekholm was fifth in the invitational high jump clearing 5’9.25″/1.76m, and Carly Hinkle placed fourth in the open high jump with a clearance at Carly Hinkle 5’7″/1.70m.
Friday report
McLaughlin ran a world-leading outdoor 400-meter dash season debut time of 50.07 in the rain. That time was the collegiate freshman record, and made her the No. 2 performer in NCAA history. Texas’ 2016 “The Bowerman” winner Courtney Okolo is the only collegian to have ever run faster during the season, on two occasions, having run 49.71 as a senior in 2016 and 50.03 in 2014.
McLaughlin of course also shattered the Kentucky 400m record and moved to No. 6 on the World Junior 400m all-time list. She also notably broke 2016 Rio Olympic Gold Medalist Shaunae Miller’s track record of 50.17 (2015), and two-time Olympic 4x400m relay gold medalist Francena McCorory Florida Relays record 50.23 (2011).
The SEC indoor 400m champion and NCAA indoor silver medalist started her outdoor season on Thursday by running the NCAA-leading women’s 200-meter time 22.39.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn who was second to her teammate in the 200m on Thursday ran a sporty 100m hurdles season opener to win her signature event in 12.77 into a -0.8 headwind.
Katy Kunc won the Florida Relays women’s 3k steeplechase easily for the second year in a row, running a de facto time trial in 10:17.40.
Freshman Dwight St. Hillaire broke Hamil Grimes 38-year-old Kentucky 400m record by .12 seconds, running 45.62 to place second overall.
