GAINESVILLE, Fla. and RALEIGH, N.C. – Kentucky freshman Sydney McLaughlin put the track and field world on notice once again, certainly for the second day in a row, to headline Kentucky’s Friday at the Florida Relays.
23086
The 2016 Olympian ran a world-leading outdoor 400-meter dash season debut time of 50.07 in the rain. That time was the collegiate freshman record, and made her the No. 2 performer in NCAA history. Texas’ 2016 “The Bowerman” winner Courtney Okolo is the only collegian to have ever run faster during the season, on two occasions, having run 49.71 as a senior in 2016 and 50.03 in 2014.

McLaughlin of course also shattered the Kentucky 400m record and moved to No. 6 on the World Junior 400m all-time list. She also notably broke 2016 Rio Olympic Gold Medalist Shaunae Miller’s track record of 50.17 (2015), and two-time Olympic 4x400m relay gold medalist Francena McCorory Florida Relays record 50.23 (2011).

The SEC indoor 400m champion and NCAA indoor silver medalist started her outdoor season on Thursday by running the NCAA-leading women’s 200-meter time 22.39.
23082
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn who was second to her teammate in the 200m on Thursday ran a sporty 100m hurdles season opener to win her signature event in 12.77 into a -0.8 headwind.

Katy Kunc won the Florida Relays women’s 3k steeplechase easily for the second year in a row, running a de facto time trial in 10:17.40.

Freshman Dwight St. Hillaire broke Hamil Grimes 38-year-old Kentucky 400m record by .12 seconds, running 45.62 to place second overall.
Dwight St. Hillaire
Benjamin Young ran a two-second personal best 3:42.75 to place second in the 1,500m. That time ranks No. 10 on the UK all-time list. Kendall Muhammad placed eighth with a time of 3:45.38.

Kentucky Class of 2017 and reigning U.S. 60m Champion Javianne Oliver won the women’s 100m in 11.39. Freshman Celera Barnes was seventh in 11.66 (+0.1).

Marie-Josée Ebwea-Bile placed third in the women’s long jump, posting a mark of 20’0.5″/6.11m (+0.2).
Daniel Roberts was fifth in the men’s 110m hurdles running 13.91 into a -0.2 wind. Kentucky Class of 2017 alumnus Nick Anderson placed fourth running 13.80 (+0.7).

Charles Lenford Jr. tossed a third-place discus mark of 163’2″/49.73m.

Matthew Thomas ran a 12-second personal best in the 3k steeplechase to finish fourth in 9:07.55.
23084
Kentucky volunteer assistant coach and Arkansas alumnus Omar McLeod won the men’s 100m in 10.32 (+0.2).

Travis Riley placed second in the men’s long jump with a mark of 25’00″/7.63m (+0.3).

Elsewhere, UK’s lone entry at the Raleigh Relays, Jacob Thomson, placed fourth in the 10k with a sporty season-opening time of 29:10.55.

McLaughlin started her outdoor season by running the NCAA-leading women’s 200-meter time 22.39 seconds to kick off, literally and figuratively, the Florida Relays on Thursday.

Teammate Jasmine Camacho-Quinn was second, winning the second heat after McLaughlin won the first heat of the day, with the second fastest qualifying time in the NCAA this season (allowable for NCAA East Preliminary Championships qualifying purposes) 22.59w (+3.0).

McLaughlin’s time broke the UK freshman record, made her the No. 2 performer on the UK all-time list behind 2015 NCAA Champion’s Dezerea Bryant’s NCAA–winning 22.18 and moved her to No. 4 on the world junior all-time list, a solid start to the outdoor campaign.

The top 32 times/marks in every event recorded during the outdoor season qualify for East Prelims. Recording those times and marks early in the season are the name of the game at this point in the outdoor regular season. Sprint (100-200m) times are allowable as long as the wind is less than 4.0 meters/second, in contrast to record-recording purposes, which only allow winds slower than 2.0 m/s.

The meet continues Saturday starting at 10 a.m. ET at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.
23085
Eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams competing at the Florida Relays are ranked in the USTFCCCA preseason top 25. In all, 102 universities are entered in this year’s Florida Relays.
