UK Rifle Falls at Top-Ranked WVU
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Top-ranked West Virginia topped the No. 3 Kentucky rifle team by a score of 4713-4674 on Saturday.
“It’s disappointing the way we finished score wise because I thought we trained well during the week,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “So now we just need put in more work in training to try and iron out some kinks.
“Overall I thought the team worked well. We had some hiccups along the way, but nothing that can’t be fixed if we look deep inside ourselves to figure out why we’re shooting some of the shots we’re shooting.”
West Virginia’s aggregate score this weekend was the seventh highest in the country this season.
In smallbore, Kentucky shot a 2312 and then followed that with a 2362 in air rifle.
Freshman Hanna Carr finished as the high individual for the Wildcats with a 583 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle for an aggregate score of 1174 and fourth place.
In air rifle, Heather Kirby took fourth place with a 593, but tied West Virginia’s Garret Spurgeon and Meelis Kiisk who finished in second and third place with the same score.
Sophomore Billy Azzinaro had the second best aggregate score on UK, and sixth best of the match: 1167. He shot a smallbore 579 and an air rifle 588.
