Sophomore Terrence Jones is one of 50 players recognized in the pre-season by the Wooden Award. (Chet White, UK Athletics)

You’re not going to believe this, but a Kentucky men’s basketball player has received preseason recognition. With less than two weeks before Big Blue Madness, Terrence Jones was recognized by the Los Angeles Athletic Club as one of 50 top pre-season candidates for the John R. Wooden Award. The Wooden Award annually recognizes the best player in college basketball and is generally thought of as the most prestigious of any such awards.Jones opted to return to UK this season even though his stellar freshman season likely would have gotten him picked in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft. He is John Calipari’s leading returning scored and rebounder with 15.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. You may be wondering, “Where is Anthony Davis or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on that list?” It’s a valid question, but the answer is that no freshmen, transfers or medical redshirts are eligible for the preseason list, though they could certainly be candidates down the road.
