Cameron Phillips Leads Cats on Day One at Linger Longer

EATONTON, Ga. – The Kentucky men’s golf team matched its lowest round in relation to par this season, firing 8-under as a team to sit in a tie for seventh after day one of the Linger Longer Invitational at Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee (par 72, 7073 yards).

It marked the fourth time UK has totaled 8-under as a team over 18 holes this season, and the third time this spring, a feat which puts the Cats in the upper half of an 18-team field which includes six teams ranked inside the top 50 in the nation. The Cats are just three shots back of second place, while Georgia leads the way as a team at 21-under after 18 holes.

Making his first appearance in the Wildcats’ starting five this season, freshman Cameron Phillips carded the lowest round in relation to par of his freshman campaign, signing 68 (-4). Phillips’ colorful card included eight birdies, tied for the second most of any player in the field. After a bogey on his first hole of the day, Phillips would go on to birdie three straight, and four of the next five, to jumpstart his round. The Portsmouth, Ohio native also birdied his final two holes of the day to polish off the career round and end the day tied for ninth among 108 players.

Jack Schoenberger continued his strong play with a 2-under round of 70, his sixth round under par in seven loops this spring. He is tied for 22nd on the leaderboard, as his freshman Cole Stockard who matched Schoenberger’s 2-under effort. Schoenberger made just one bogey on the day, while Stockard had only two.

Jacob Lang provided the fourth counting score for the Cats with an even-par total of 72, his 10th round at par-or-better this season. Lang is tied for 44th, as is Gavin Clutts, who also managed to finish at even par, competing as an individual.

Individual competitor Luke Coyle fired a 2-over par 74 and is tied for 63rd, while Jacob Settles is 4-over and tied for 90th.

Kentucky’s starting lineup was 2-under par on the par 3s for the day, the best of any team in the field.

Round two of the Linger Longer Invitational will take place on Saturday. Kentucky will have tee times from 8:30 a.m. to 9:06 a.m. off hole No. 1, paired with Virginia Tech and Kennesaw State.
