Schlarman Earns Place on Academic All-District Team, Advances toAcademic All-America Ballot: Offensive guard John Schlarman has earneda place on the GTE Academic All-District IV team and now advances to thenational ballot for Academic All-America. Schlarman, a senior from Ft.Thomas, Ky., has a 3.20 grade point average with a major in math education.He is a two-year member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.In addition, he has participated in “The Cats’ Cause” community serviceprogram.
On the field, Schlarman was a four-year starter in the UK offensiveline. He was chosen UK’s Most Outstanding Lineman following his sophomoreand junior seasons. He was named to the 1996 “Unsung Hero All-America Team”by the College Football Chronicle in honor of his dedication andperseverance. John endured five major injuries and three knee surgeriesduring his career. To qualify for the Academic All-America team, a playermust have at least a 3.20 grade point average and be a starter or topreserve. The District IV team is comprised of players from the states ofMichigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. Voting is handled by theCollege Sports Information Directors of America.
Recruiting Trail Enters Full Contact Period: The footballrecruiting process enters the full contact period on Dec. 1. Coaches mayvisit the schools and homes of prospective student-athletes and theprospects will continue to make official visits to the University ofKentucky campus. A maximum of seven of UK’s 10 full-time coaches arepermitted to participate in off-campus recruiting on any given day.
Players Begin Off-Season Workouts: The Wildcats football playershave begun their off-season weightlifting and conditioning program. Theplayers work out four times each week under the guidance of strength coachRob Oviatt.
