LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky junior varsity football team dropped to Hargrave Military Academy 40-7 for the second straight year at Commonwealth Stadium.
The Wildcats (1-1) fell short early in the first quarter on a seven-yard run by Hargrave’s Kenneth Bailey and a 29-yard pass from quarterback Hunter Cross to wide receiver Carlton Lofton. Hargrave then posted a 28-0 lead at the half on a blocked punt, recovered in UK’s end zone by Hargrave’s T.J. Mawhinney. Kentucky’s only scoring drive of the game came in the opening of the third quarter on a 32-yard pass from UK quarterback Cory Doyle to Danville native Neal Brown.
“We knew we were outmatched from the start,” second-year jayvee coach Chris Hatcher said. “We played hard and got some good things out of it. Our receivers ran good routes, we just couldn’t connect tonight.”
Hargrave’s defense held UK to only seven first downs in the game and 177 yards of offense. Bailey led the Tigers in rushing with 20 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns. UK was led by wide receiver Alex Herman with six catches for 76 yards. Doyle completed 15 of 43 passes with three interceptions and one touchdown. UK linebacker Michael Clayborne led both teams in tackles with 11.
Last season the Wildcats lost a heartbreaker 41-40 to the Tigers in the final minute of the game. The Wildcats will travel to Georgetown on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. in Georgetown, Ky., for their first road game of the season.
