John Wilson hit his SEC-leading 20th home run of the year and moved into a tie for second place in the UK record books for most home runs in a season, but the Wildcats (21-26) could not defeat the Cincinnati Bearcats, and lost 3-2 in 17 innings.
The game moved at record pace, playing the first nine innings in one hour and 50 minutes, but neither team had the lead. Eight innings and two hours and four minutes later, the Bearcats (21-25) picked up their second victory of the season against Kentucky.
UK starting pitcher Omar Henry and UC starting pitcher Mike Heis battled for the first five innings until Cincinnati scored one run in the top of the sixth. Anthony Snowell led off the inning with a double and scored on Craig Tewes RBI single down the right field line.
Cincinnati held a one-run lead until the bottom of the ninth. Wilson led off the inning with a solo shot over the left field wall to tie the game at one-all and sent the game into extra innings.
The Bearcats manufactured a run in the top of the 13th as Snowell picked up his second hit of the evening by doubling to right field. He stole second and scored on Matt Singers RBI single.
Kentucky responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back-to-back singles by Andy Green, Beau Moore, and Aaron McGlone. McGlones RBI single tied the game at 2-2. Despite three consecutive singles with no outs, UK could not score, and the marathon game continued.
The Bearcats scored the winning run in the top of the 17th as freshman Aaron Wilson picked up his second loss of the season. UK saw the depth of its bullpen, using seven pitchers in the game. Right fielder/reliever Breck Price struck out a career-high seven batters in four innings pitched.
Kentucky returns to action on Friday, May 7, playing host to SEC rival Auburn in another crucial conference series at Cliff Hagan Stadium. Fridays game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
