LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky volleyball team (1-0) opened its 1998 season with a 3-0 victory over Morehead State, 15-7, 15-9, 15-5 Tuesday night in UK’s Memorial Coliseum.

Junior outside hitter Katie Eiserman led the Wildcats’ offensive attack, recording 11 kills, with five in the final game. Senior outside hitter LaTanya Webb provided a solid performance with nine kills and nine digs in the contest, while UK junior Terri Crabb recorded a match-high 29 assists.

The Wildcats’ first victory marked the return to the sideline for new UK head coach Jona Braden. The former UK associate coach was pleased with the focus and effort of her team.

“It’s always good to get a win; that’s a given,” said Braden. “I was pleased with the way we stayed with our game plan and remained focused on getting one point at a time.”

Kentucky’s defense made an impressive showing, out-blocking the Eagles 7-1. The Eagles did not record a block until the third and final game. Morehead State’s Lauren Mackey led the Eagles with 13 kills and a .258 hitting percentage.

The Wildcats travel to Purdue this weekend when they look to record the school’s 500th victory. Kentucky’s next home match will be September 15, when it will play host to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at 7 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
