Baton Rouge, La. – The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team dropped its second straight conference road game, falling to Louisiana State University, 67-59, in Baton Rouge, La., on Thursday. Missed layups and rebounding proved too costly for the Wildcats (11-5, 2-3) in the first half as the Lady Tigers (12-3, 4-1) took a 35-27 lead and a 24-19 advantage on the boards. UK, however, came out on a 12-0 run in the second half to regain the lead, 39-37, since leading 15-14 in the first half. LSU would battle back to tie the score at 48 with 8:44 remaining before pulling away with the help of forwards April Brown and Katrina Hibbert. Hibbert led all scorers with 22 points while Brown scored seven of her 11 points in the second half. Center Detrina White also scored seven points in the last half, charting 15 points and nine rebounds for the game.
Four Wildcats posted double figures with junior Tiffany Wait and freshman LaTonya McDole leading with 12 points apiece. Sophomore Laura Meadows added 11 points and senior Jaye Barnes chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds. UK committed 22 turnovers compared to LSU’s 17 and hit only 7-of-15 free throws compared to LSU’s 17-of-27. “I thought we executed our game plan tonight better than we have all year,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “We just missed easy shots and free throws. That killed us down the stretch.” The Cats haven’t won in Baton Rouge since 1994-95, winning 63-49 in their last regular season game of the season. LSU holds a 12-6 overall record versus the Cats.
UK will face the top-ranked Lady Vols in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. The Cats will then face the Lady Cardinals in Louisville on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
