GAINESVILLE, Fla.- The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Southeastern Conference championships on Saturday. Five Wildcats turned in times qualifying them for the finals on Sunday, May 24. Sophomores Matthew Kavanagh and Beth Burkett and freshman Andrew Channer each had solid performances in the field events. In the men’s hammer competition, Matthew Kavanagh threw for a mark of 209 feet 5 inches (63.84m). Kavanagh tallied a third place finish and six points for the UK team.

Fellow sophomore James Shannon recorded a respectable ninth place finish with a mark of 187 feet 5 inches (57.12m). Andrew Channer’s 24 feet 8.25 inch (7.52m) performance in the men’s long jump was enough to record an eighth place finish for the freshman. Beth Burkett placed fourth in the finals of the women,s javelin with a mark of 136 feet 10 inches, while adding five points for the women’s team. In the running events, Jeffrey Limpert will compete in the finals of the 800 meter run on Sunday. The junior qualified for the finals of the event with an eighth place time of 1:50.52.

Jeffrey Ellis edged out Florida’s Erin Tucker to take first place in the men’s 400 meter hurdles. Ellis qualified to compete in Sunday’s finals. Junior Shonnishia Johnson and freshman Lutisha Shittu finished in third and fifth place, respectively, in the women’s 100 meter high hurdles. Johnson recorded a time of 13.20 to qualify for the event’s finals. Shittu’s finish of 13.48 also placed her in the qualifying heat.

In the women’s 400 meter run, junior Roshell Russell finished with a time of 53.12. Russell’s fifth place time placed her in the finals of the event.

Freshmen Hazel Hanson-Monnie and Falana Greenwell finished in 17th and 20th place, respectively. Hanson-Monnie finished with a time of 55.94 while Greenwell turned in a time of 58.15. Other noteworthy finishes for the men’s team include an 11th place finish by junior Marvin Love in the 100 meter run. The gridiron cross-over finished in a time of 10.61. Senior Matthew Igyarto recorded a 12th place finish in the 1500 meter run. Igyarto completed the race with a time of 4.00.16. In the 400 meter run, junior Thomas Jonsson placed 14th with a time of 48.97. For the women’s team, junior Sarah Yancey finished ninth in the high jump competition with a jump of 5 feet 7 inches (1.70m) After three days of competition, the men,s team is in 10th place, while the women find themselves 12th in the team standings.
