FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Robert Newton extended his hitting streak to eightgames and Taylor McInnis was two-for-four, but the Kentucky Wildcats(12-20, 4-11 SEC) could not avoid a three-game sweep by the ArkansasRazorbacks (26-12, 12-3 SEC) and lost Sunday’s game, 9-5.
Kentucky scored first in the contest, capitalizing on an error by leftfielder Ryan Lundquist as Newton reached second with only one out. McInnissingled to right field to advance the runner to third, and Newton scored ona fielder’s choice by Nate Linder.
The Wildcats could not maintain their lead as the Razorbacks scored threeruns in the third. Joe Jester led off the inning with a solo home run overthe left field wall to tie that game at one-all. Two more runs crossed theplate on Brian Kirby’s double before UK could get out of the inning.
Kentucky battled in the top of the seventh as John Wilson walked and laterscored on Vince Harrison’s two-run home run blast over the right field wallthat gave the Wildcats a brief lead. But Arkansas answered with a three-runseventh and a two-run eighth to regain the lead.
Down four runs in the top of the ninth, Linder led off the inning with awalk. Wilson singled to right center to put runners on the corners with twomen out. Harrison walked to load the bases, but no Wildcats crossed theplate as Breck Price grounded out to give the Razorbacks’ their tenthconsecutive conference victory, 9-5.
Kentucky takes a break from conference action to play host to Louisvilleon Tuesday, April 13, and Belmont University on Wednesday, April 14. Bothgames are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Kentucky travels to Gaineville,Fla., for a three-game series against the Florida Gators beginning on April16.
