BALTIMORE, Md. – Three members of the University of Kentucky women’s tennis team competed in pre-qualifying matches for the National Clay Court Championships on Saturday.

Brooke Skeen of Kentucky defeated Raquel Araujo of Old Dominion in the opening round, 6-4, 6-1, and won a second round match over Regan Campbell of American, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Skeen advances to the final round of pre-qualifying tomorrow, where she will face Sandra Fischer of Colorado. UK freshman Shannon Stafford, playing in her first collegiate match, also advanced to the final round. Stafford topped Erin Dawe of Radford, 6-1, 6-0, and Anne Mange of George Mason 6-4, 6-2, and will now take on Marcella Kocesovcova of South Alabama in tomorrow’s final. UK’s Christy Sigurski won her first round match, besting Millie Kannarkat of Old Dominion, 6-4, 6-1. Sigurski battled Megan Cornwall of West Virginia in the second round, but came up short, falling 6-2, 6-3.

“I’m really happy with the way the girls played today,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “This should be a boost to our team for the upcoming year.”
